> But in the end, did East and West turn out to be all that different?
I've been using this sort of line the past few years to explode the minds of conservatives and libertarians. Are the USG and European equivalents really _that_ different than China? :right-winger has physical convulsion:
The reason the viking LARPer's picture was bad was because he was copying someone who had done it first, and as a result his picture had the same flaws as the original.
The Carhartt-clad gentleman who ended up being photographed (at a close-up) in Pelosi's office was the one who first stood at the podium; somebody (I'm guessing a journalist) took a picture of him from a distance. The viking LARPer came afterwards; I imagine he wanted to get his own photo-op and had already seen the picture of Mr. Carhartt striking the same pose (the picture was widely available on social media). The photos have the exact same staging.
I’m glad these sentiments are being considered. While a lot of us are probably seeing our crypto and equity portfolios skyrocket as we “WFH”, we run the risk of forgetting the USG would stomp us like a bug if they even knew we were here. The clear pill may have deadly second hand side effects.
Wow! Pumping out some serious content Curtis! I certainly feel I’m getting my money’s worth and then some these last few days! It’s been like Nihilist Christmas every day this week!
I chose to come to Israel back in 2011. Let's hope it doesn't become a matter of necessity for you (shame about those vaccine stats, though). It's really not that hard to learn Hebrew, by the way, although were I in your position, I too would probably keep on with the Latin.
"America is a country. USG is the sovereign corporation, or regime, that owns the country. More people need to learn to see this distinction clearly and frankly."
I was reminded of this over and over again while listening to Sam Harris's recent podcast, "Insurrection of Lies." Multiple times he described Trump's rhetoric as "a threat to our Country" and the transformation of the Capitol into a honky-tonk as "a desecration of our Democracy," or some such. Real religious language. And if for some reason you do not find those sentences perfectly and mutually reinforcing, I assure you: he does. Also, at no point did he reference "our Government." Hm.
I've always liked Sam Harris and will continue to. Indeed, I think he's my new favorite Loyalist.
Sorry, off-topic: I was reading your old UR post that mentions Dag Hammarskjöld's Waymarks, and thought you may be interested in knowing there's a newer translation that is freely available that seeks to correct the one from 1964, which was made by W. H. Auden who apparently knew no Swedish.
It is quite interesting how the book is talked about. It certainly feels like a kind of scripture, even in the way that it is cited.
I'm getting kind of worried about how much I'm enjoying this substack of yours

Everytime *nothing* happens I first think of what's to come at Gray Mirror

What other countries would be on Yarvin's list of candidates besides Israel?
